French composer and pianist Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is widely regarded as one of the most original and popular composers of the early twentieth-century. Born in the latter half of the nineteenth century in a small village near Saint-Jean-de-Luz in France he was brought up in Paris since he was three month old. On the last of them he was eliminated at the preliminary round and this caused a scandal in the press which even resulted in the director of the Conservatoire losing his post. An American composer and songwriter of the 20th-century, Samuel Barbers works reflected European Romantic tradition.
